My lovely friend Courtenay is a stylist and fashion lover who lives in Los Angeles and writes about fashion, travel, music and all things gorgeous on her own blog. She attends New York Fashion week, styles for photo shoots, videos and had Kelly Clarkson looking the best she's ever looked in her video for "Mr. Know it All" last fall. She knows fashion, people!
Having someone who knows about fashion shop with you is like all those advice columns from fashion magazines come to life. Lucky for me, Courtenay has talked me into some amazing items over the years ("you HAVE to get those, Dolce & Gabbana shoes will NEVER be $180 again"), so on a recent trip home to Canada I gave Courtenay a challenge: find us some great items we should add to our wardrobe for spring, and nothing over $100. For Courtenay, this is a challenge, believe me!
Having this shopping dynamo at my disposal, I had to share her with you! Only Courtenay can talk me into a long skirt that I swore would be unflattering (I was wrong), buying expensive jeans that felt too tight (she was right they fit great), and trying a trend without slaving to it. Take some inpiration and think about what works for you - a floral bustier or feathers might not be your jam, take the inpsiration with you and work it into your closest where it works for you!
Hello STUFF readers. Recently on a quick trip home to Vancouver Sarah posed me with a shopping challenge…..to find my favourite Spring Essentials for $100 or under. Now - I am an expert shopper and didn’t hesitate to accept because it sounded like a no brainer. So I made my way to Richmond Centre, my old stomping grounds (also known as the mall across from my high school I would hang at when skipping class). I was ready with my trusty iPhone to take notes on a quick in-and-out shopping trip, but I was sorely mistaken. Shopping in Canada is EXPENSIVE! I couldn’t believe the prices and low quality, even on the expensive items. Here are my picks for spring, happy shopping!
Clockwise from top left:
Zipped Clutch in Natural with Neon Green $99.90 | www.zara.com
I must have this clutch!!!! First of all I am a clutch girl, secondly I love natural coloured leather and third I am a major sucker for neon. Put them all together and I have found my must have bag for spring.
MAC “Cook” Nail Laquer in Al Fredo & “Chenman” in Breezy Blue both $19 | www.maccosmetics.com
MAC has some rad nail colours this season and these are my two faves. Again I am a sucker for neon and this blue is electric. Both are very eye catching so you better make sure they aren’t chipped.
The Denim Shirt:
TNA “Marshall Classic” Denim Shirt $95 (pictured) & TNA “Sutter Boyfriend” Denim Shirt $95 | www.aritzia.com
I love denim shirts and wear mine all the time with long flowy skirts, tight mini skirts, as a lightweight cover up over a maxi dress and yes even with a pair of blue jeans. If you have the right tones of denim it can be a sexy classic look. I love these from TNA - they are both super soft, easy to wear, and these two different styles work for different body types.
The Long Skirt:
Zara Long Fine Pleat Skirt $59.90 | www.zara.com
The long flowy skirt is great for all body types and a great option on hot days if you don’t want to be too exposed…or like me when you haven’t put your tan on yet. The blush colour of this one is the perfect neutral for Spring and you can pair it with white, grey or even your new fave denim shirt. It is a bit cheeky being sheer, but I like being cheeky.
I don’t even have my ears pierced and I want these earrings. I am a boho rock n’ roller and I don’t care if feathers are on their way out I still have a soft spot for them. I found these ones at Blue Ruby and unfortunately they don’t carry them on the website but call your local store and see if they are in stock. They are sold individually and I think that is the best way to wear them as well. Feathers in both ears is a bit too much and looks like you are trying too hard. Keep it to one and then you still have one ear available for a nuzzle.
The Ballet Flat:
“Neon City” Flat in Neon Orange $39.95 | www.gapcanada.ca
I don’t usually wear ballet flats but recently I have found myself very attracted to them because they now come in so many playful colours and patterns. The Gap has these super cute neon orange ones which would look great with a simple look of a white tee and white jeans. I don’t feel like this image does the colour justice, I would suggest popping into the store and seeing them in person.
Free To Be “Paulina Warrior” Scarf $45 | www.freetobeoneofakind.blogspot.com
Now I did not discover this rad scarf at Richmond Centre but I still had to share because it is one of my new essentials. My brother introduced me to Julia the lovely designer behind Free To Be and I was an instant fan. My favourite is the Paulina Warrior of course because of the feathers. I own a lot of scarves and I have never found one with this accoutrement and love the extra personality it provides and at this deal it is an absolute steal. Look for her luxury line full of cashmere called House of Doves, debuting soon.
Talula Bustier in Vintage Rose $35 | www.aritzia.com
The bustier is a new look I want to rock this spring and I am in love with this rose patterned one from Talula. It is feminine, flirty and sexy. I can’t wait to pair it with a high waisted wide leg jean, or my super skinny blue jeans and tuck it in for some extra sexiness.
